Khan claims Model Town JIT report “shocking”
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has termed the report of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) on the Model Town incident “shocking” and said that it was the “height of injustice”, according to local media sources.
In a message posted on his verified Twitter account on Saturday, the PTI chairman said that the report, which had absolved Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and then provincial law minister Rana Sanaullah from charges of ordering police to open fire on Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) activists, would send police the message that “they can do it again with impunity,” reportedly.
All five members of the JIT, in their report on last year’s incident, had unanimously declared Shahbaz Sharif and Rana Sanaullah “innocent” and dismissed all allegations against them, which were mentioned in the FIR lodged by Minhajul Quran as “baseless and without any evidence.”
SBP cuts interest rate to 7%, lowest in 42 years
The State Bank of Pakistan on Saturday cut its benchmark interest rate to 7 per cent, the lowest in 42 years in a bid to increase economic growth.
“The discount rate has been lowered to 7% from 8%,” State Bank Governor Ashraf Mahmood Wathra said during a press conference in Islamabad on Saturday.
The discount rate is at its lowest since August 1973.
In March, in line with analysts’ expectations, the SBP reduced the discount rate by 0.5% to 8% for the next two months.
The central bank cut the key interest rate in the economy by a cumulative 2% since last November partly because of a sharp decline in inflation.
The discount rate is the interest rate at which commercial banks are allowed to borrow from the central bank’s discount window on an overnight basis. Central banks use this monetary policy tool to control money supply in the economy in order to achieve price stability and economic growth targets.
Inflation has decreased each month this year as transport and food prices fell.
Inflation will average about 4.2% in 2015 before accelerating to 5.4% in 2016, according to a Bloomberg survey published in April.
The recent cut in discount rate comes after the International Monetary Fund scaled back Pakistan’s growth forecast for the year through June 30 to 4.1% from 4.3% and 4.5% from 4.7% for the following 12 months.
Earlier this month, Standard and Poor’s (S&P) ratings’ agency raised Pakistan’s credit rating to positive from stable but affirmed its B- rating, as the country experiences economic growth, according to Bloomberg news agency.
“The positive outlook reflects our expectations of Pakistan’s improved economic growth prospects, fiscal and external performance, and the supportive relationship of external donors over the next 12 months,” the ratings agency said.
SBP announces Monetary Policy, cuts 100 bps in discount rate
KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) in its sixth monetary policy of the year on Saturday slashed 100 basis points, which is another historical low in Pakistan.
Governor SBP Ashraf Mahmood Wathra addressing the monetary policy announced 100 basis points (one percent) cut in the discount rate, which going down to historic low of seven percent.
The central bank governor said that the cut in discount rate will boost business and trade in the country.
The SBP earlier cut its policy rate thrice since November 2014 to 8 per cent.
The main inflation indicator, Consumer Price Index (CPI), has moved to record low. The central bank and many analysts believe that the average inflation will remain in the range of 4-5pc by the end of the ongoing fiscal year.
Moreover, transfer of low international oil prices to local markets is expected to provide further relief to commodity prices and thus inflation would stand at low.
The balance of payment situation of the country is going to improve in future as the government is expected to receive inflows from the IMF and other international monetary agencies. The foreign exchange reserves presently stand at impressive $17.7 billion, which will further improve with inflows along with foreign direct investments and remittances.
Living space: Govt eager to offer cheap housing, says PM
LAHORE: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said the government is keen to construct cheap housing units for the low-income group and provide them with roofs over their heads.
In a meeting with a delegation of SP Tech (Pvt) Ltd, led by its chairman Hans Wilhelmson, the prime minister emphasised that housing was one of the most important human needs and was related to other societal issues like provision of employment, transportation, sanitation, education and health facilities.
The SP Tech team gave PM a detailed presentation on the technical and financial aspects of low cost housing in the country, according to a PM House statement. He was informed that country was facing a shortfall of more than three million housing units with demand in urban areas increasing at a faster pace.
KP CCI demands new incentive package, tax holiday in budget
Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar on Saturday met delegation of businesspersons and representatives of KP Chamber of Commerce led by Senator Ilyas Bilour.
The delegation emphasized grant of a new incentive package for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in view of the economic difficulties arising due to the sensitive security situation that made the economy go sluggish. The delegation requested income tax holiday to all industries and businesses in KP for a period of five years and also requested that mark-up on bank loans should be subsidized, new investments in KP should be extended income tax exemption for five years and that moratorium on new gas connection in KPK should be lifted.
The delegation also drew the minister’s attention to the restriction of 100 metric tons export of ghee/cooking oil in three months imposed in March 2013. The delegation observed that the restriction/ceiling had rendered the ghee and cooking oil industry uncompetitive in the Afghan market where the foreign brand ghee was available at lower prices compared to the stuff manufactured in Pakistan. In order to give level-playing field to the ghee sector, the delegation said either the government should abolish the quota system or the quota of 1000 MT in 90 days should be enhanced to 1000 MT per month.
The minister issued instructions to the FBR chairman to extend thorough consideration to the proposals submitted by the KP delegation keeping in view the state of economy in the province. He said new incentives for the KP would be considered in the 2015-16 budget.
Dar welcomes reduction in policy rate
ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar has welcomed the announcement by State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to reduce its policy rate from 8 per cent to 7 per cent and said it would spur business and economic activities in the country.
The minister, in a statement, said the SBP decision was a manifestation of improvement in macroeconomic conditions as reflected in multi-year low inflation and considerably improved external account.
The current CPI inflation of 4.8% in the first ten months of the current fiscal year supports the SBP decision, he added.
Ishaq Dar said the historical reduction in the interest rate was now expected to be translated into significant decline in the market interest rates.
"With already a significant decline in inflation containing increase in cost of production, the decline in interest rate provides a golden opportunity to the industry and other borrowers to expand their current business activities and increase their investment in Pakistan," he said.
"Indeed, with stable banking system, increased construction activity, and buoyant investor confidence, the private sector credit should pick up both for working capital as well as for fixed investment. This will further contribute towards the acceleration in GDP (gross domestic product) growth for fiscal year 2015-16," he added. – APP
